The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently announced that it will reopen the registration period for federal beneficiaries who did not receive $500 per child payments earlier this year. Individuals who receive certain federal benefits – but did not receive the $500 payment per child earlier this year – can still file for the $500 payment.
Eligibility Criteria
Those eligible to apply include people with qualifying children who receive Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Railroad Retirement benefits, or Veterans Affairs Compensation and Pension (C&P) benefits and who did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019.
Online or Paper Application Process
The IRS urges federal benefit recipients to use the IRS.gov Non-Filers tool. The Non-Filers tool is available on IRS.gov in both English and Spanish. The tool to enter information about their qualifying children and receive the catch-up $500 payment per child, is available until Wednesday, September 30th.
Utilizing the Get My Payment Tool found on IRS.gov, eligible recipients can check the status of their catch-up payment. IRS Notice 1444 will be mailed to recipients once the payment has been issued The IRS anticipates the catch-up payments will be issued by mid-October. Those unable to access the Non-Filers tool may file a simplified paper return following the FAQ instructions on IRS.gov. Those who received their original Economic Impact Payment by direct deposit will also have any catch-up payment direct deposited to the same account. Others will receive a check.
