Effective January 1, 2024, the Illinois Victims’ Economic Safety and Security Act now applies to situations where a family member died as a result of a violent crime. Effective January 1, 2024, employees who have suffered such a loss are allowed to take up to 10 business days to make arrangements for a funeral, attend the funeral, and grieve for a family member or household member. This leave must be taken with 60 days of notification of the death. Employees may take the longer of any leave authorized by this Act or the Illinois Family Bereavement Leave Act, but the leave periods are not cumulative.
