The Trump Administration issued instructions to employees of multiple federal agencies
ordering employees to remove their pronouns from official government communications and email signatures by 5 pm Friday, February 7, 2025.
The memos included instructions for how to edit email signatures and review agency email systems to turn off features that prompt users for their pronouns.
The mandate is the latest result of the Trump administration’s executive orders eliminating diversity and equity efforts and DEI language in the federal government. A similar executive order directed the Office of Management and Budget to terminate all federal programs related to “diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility,” ending any consideration of DEI factors, goals, or policies and curate lists of the “economic and social costs” of these programs. This includes any “environmental justice” or “equity-related” programming. According to CNN, The State Department has removed references on The State Department website that relate to LGBTQ people and the Department of Defense announced that it will not host events for “cultural awareness months.”
