Obama Administration Proposes Paid Sick Leave

Proposed Leave for non-Federal Employees

The Obama administration will be pushing Congress to pass the Healthy Families Act which will mandate employers to provide seven (7) days of paid sick leave to employees to care for themselves or their families benefit. If passed, the president will outline a plan for states to create paid-leave programs and fund feasibility studies with money from the Department of Labor.

Leave for Federal Employees

As part of this initiative, President Obama signed a memorandum guaranteeing federal employees six (6) weeks of paid sick leave for birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child. The proposal would also allow parents to use sick days to care for a healthy child after a birth mother’s period of incapacitation or after an adoption. Currently, Federal employees are only allowed to accrue 30 days of paid sick leave a year.
